Telescope Mount Assembly for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope

Ingersoll Machine Tools, Inc., a leading supplier of machine tools and complex assemblies has been was awarded the Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) in December 2010.

Ingersoll was selected based on its exceptional experience of building the highest quality large structures, which are guided and controlled for precise movement. Since the project was awarded, all structural steel for the TMA, as well as the 16 meter (52.5’) Coudé rotating floor, were purchased from companies in the state of Illinois. The contract is ongoing and will be shipped at the end of 2014.

The longevity of this and other large projects is helping Ingersoll maintain and grow various professional and skilled labor positions within the company. Ingersoll remains entrenched in the Rockford Business Community that will continue to support innovative manufacturing here in Illinois and across the USA.

Led by the National Solar Observatory, the ATST project is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.

ATST will be a world-class 4 meter optical telescope that will serve the solar physics community throughout the 21st century and will host an array of instruments and adaptive optics, the leading technical advance that makes large-aperture solar telescopes practical.
